How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: an AI answer listing local shops where your shop is not mentioned

"Suggest a good saree shop in Andheri East that's open on Sunday." More of your customers now type questions like this into ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode instead of a search box. They get one neat answer with three or four names in it. If your business isn't recommended by ChatGPT in that answer, you don't even get the chance to lose the sale.

In Google's 2025 study of Indian festive shoppers, people used AI chatbots 7.5 times on average during a single shopping journey, and 51% said AI helped them decide (Think with Google, 2026). This guide explains, in plain language, how ChatGPT and Google's AI answers pick businesses to mention, and the practical steps that make yours easier to recommend. If you've been wondering how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, or how to make it show up there at all, start here.

AI assistants don't keep a secret list of favourite shops. When someone asks a question, they search the web, read what they find, and summarise it.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode may use what Google calls "query fan-out": they run several related searches across subtopics and sources, then build an answer with links. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations needed to appear. Your page just has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Google Search, and Google specifically mentions keeping your Business Profile information up to date.

  • ChatGPT search can show any public website. OpenAI says that to appear in its search summaries and snippets, your site should not block OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler.

So the businesses AI recommends are the ones with the clearest, most consistent and most trusted information online. That's good news, because it's work you control.

AI answers are built from your existing online presence. Fix the sources and the answers improve.

Step 1: Make your Google Business Profile complete

For Google's AI features, your Business Profile is the single most important source about your shop. Fill in your exact name, category, hours (including holiday hours), phone, website, products or services with prices, and attributes. Add fresh photos. AI answers love specifics such as "open till 10 pm", "home delivery in Andheri" and "bridal lehengas from ₹15,000", because they match the specific questions people ask.

Step 2: Earn reviews that describe what you're good at

When someone asks for "a salon that's good with curly hair", reviews that mention curly hair are exactly the evidence an AI summary looks for. You can't tell customers what to write, and you shouldn't, but asking every customer for an honest review naturally produces this kind of detail. My guide on how to get more Google reviews shows how, within Google's rules.

Step 3: Make your website say clearly what, where and for whom

Many small business websites are a logo, a slider and a phone number. That gives an AI almost nothing to quote. Your website should state, in plain text:

  • What you sell or do, in the words customers use ("plywood and laminates", not "premium surface solutions").

  • Where you are and which areas you serve.

  • Who it's for, your prices or price ranges, timings, and how to order or book.

  • Answers to the questions customers actually ask, written as a short FAQ.

Google advises keeping important content in text form, making pages findable through internal links, and making sure any structured data matches what's visible on the page. You don't need special AI files or markup: Google's guide to helpful, people-first content is still the standard to write for.

The "after" column answers real questions: what, where, how much, when and how. That's exactly the material AI answers are built from, and it helps human visitors decide faster too.

Step 4: Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere

AI tools cross-check sources. If Google says "Shree Ganesh Plywood", JustDial says "Shri Ganesh Plywoods" and your Instagram bio has an old number, the AI is less confident and more likely to recommend someone else. List every place your business appears, including Google, your website, Instagram, Facebook, JustDial, IndiaMART and Swiggy or Zomato if relevant, and make them match exactly.

Step 5: Check that your website lets AI search tools in

Some website builders and security plugins block bots by default. Open yourwebsite.com/robots.txt in a browser, or ask your developer, and check that it doesn't block Googlebot (needed for Google's AI features) or OAI-SearchBot (needed for ChatGPT search). OpenAI's separate GPTBot crawler is about model training, not search, so you can make that choice separately.

Step 6: Test what AI says about you, every month

Ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the questions your customers would ask, such as "best saree shop in Andheri East" or "plywood dealer near Gundavali metro", and note who gets mentioned. If you're missing, look at the businesses that appear: their Google profile, reviews and website are your to-do list. If an answer gets something wrong about you, the fix is almost always at the source. Correct your Google profile, website or directory listing, and AI answers follow.

Facts about you

What are Sharma Sarees' timings and do they deliver?

Ask in both ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and save the answers. Over a few months you'll see whether fixes to your profile, reviews and website change what they say.

What doesn't work

  • Fake reviews or review swaps. They break Google's policies and can get your profile penalised, which removes you from AI answers too.

  • Keyword-stuffed pages and names. "Best cheap saree shop Mumbai Andheri" in your business name can get your Google profile suspended.

  • Paying someone who promises "guaranteed ChatGPT ranking". No one controls what ChatGPT or Google says. Anyone selling a guarantee is selling a story.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT search draws on what's published on the web. Make sure your website doesn't block OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, that it clearly states what you do, where and for whom, and that your name, address and phone match across Google, directories and social media. Good reviews and a complete Google Business Profile help too.

Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed. Your pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Google Search, so standard SEO best practices and an up-to-date Business Profile are what matter.

No. Neither ChatGPT nor Google sells placement in their AI answers. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings.

That's a separate choice. OpenAI says GPTBot relates to model training, while OAI-SearchBot is what lets your pages appear in ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends people to, so these visits show up in Google Analytics. Also ask new customers how they found you.
